Connecting your Computer To Internet

Connecting Your Computer to the Comcast Internet

* Cable Modem Hookup
* Multiple Computer Hookup

Note: These directions are for Orchard Downs and Ashton Woods residents only! If you live in another residence hall and need assistance connecting your computer to the internet
Cable Modem Hookup

Upon moving into your Orchard Downs and Ashton Woods apartment you should find the following items:

* 1 cable modem
* 1 Power supply for cable modem
* 3 coax cables, with splitter
* 1 network cable

If you do not have one or more of these items please see the Orchard Downs main office.

Start by connecting one of coax cable to the cable wall jack. The other end of this cable should go into the side of spitter that has only one prong. Then take another coax cable, it should go from the double end of the spitter and into the cable modem. The other prong is for the coax cable to go to your television.
Now it is time to plug in your cable modem. First plug the power supply into the back of the modem and then into the outlet.

Then connect a network cable from the back of the modem and put the other end into your computer or router if you are connecting multiple computers.

If you are connecting multiple computers please see Multiple Computer Hookup.

Multiple Computer Hookup

If you have more than one computer at your residence that you want to be connected to the internet then you will need a router. A router can be rented, for the duration of your stay, for free from the Orchard Downs main office. Note: Failure to return the router upon conclusion of your Housing contract will result in a fee.

In addition to needing a new router you will also need one network cable per computer you want connected to the internet.

After the cable modem has been connected (see Cable Modem Hookup to verify.) start by plugging the ethernet cable from the modem into the "WAN" port in the router (the port farthest from the power supply spot.) Then plug the power supply for the router into the wall. Take the other end and plug it into the router. Now plug one of your ethernet cords into the back of the router (in ports labeled 1, 2, 3, or 4 only) then into the ethernet port on your computer. DO NOT remove the null plug in the port labeled Uplink! The completed setup is shown below.

Simply continue to plug other computers into the router, just as you did with your first computer.

How To Cure Your Email Addiction

How To Cure Your Email Addiction

We are often overloaded with information in our e-mail inbox which is now takes most our time to go through. Before you realist it you are hooked onto checking your e-mails frequently. Like myself I spend more time on the Internet looking for solutions to different problems. Overtime I have subscribed to a number of newsletters and everyday I was getting loads of e-mails in my Inbox. Can you imagine how much time it takes to go through all those e-mails. Then there are personal e-mails and also junk mails to deal with.

Can you imagine going through a day without checking your e-mail. Sometimes you can be stressed, that you may miss something just by not having access to your e-mail.
I came across the following ways that can help you cure your e-mail addiction and reduce all stress caused by e-mail addiction:

Try not to mix personal e-mails and business mail - discourage your friends and family from sending things to your work e-mail account. This way you won't have to keep checking your work e-mail account even in out of work hours just to see if one of your mates has send or replied your personal e-mails.

You are responsible for the volume you receive - if you are like me and you have subscribed to so many newsletters, you may have to go through your inbox and unsubscribe to some which waste your time. Sometimes you get junk mail, try not to get into the habit of reading all the junk mail. Myself I just delete most of spam mail.

You may choose to ignore your e-mail completely at certain times. This can help you concentrate more on other work you need to do. Stop replying to e-mails out of work hours. If people know they can get an answer from you at all times they start relying on that.

Find something else to read, maybe a book or you can subscribe to RSS feeds with more valuable information. You can also read a newspaper to kill time on your journeys, instead of ending up on your mobile e-mail.
Try also to set yourself time limits. This requires a lot of discipline, but you should try to limit the amount of time you spend dealing with emails.
It is important to try and balance your work and personal life.

Connecting people with technology

Voice over IP networks provides the user the opportunity to enjoy the use of telephone services through their Internet connection. Several providers of VoIP offer packages in varying degrees. These packages allow the user to have primarily the same features they have with their traditional phone service. Along with the added benefit of using their computer to make calls by having a "soft phone" in the same window as their instant messages. There are two different types of service for Voice over IP networks: hardware VoIP and software VoIP.

Several providers of telephone services are also offering Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. They know that it is less expensive to carry voice traffic over Internet protocol (IP) networks than the public switched telephone networks (PSTN). The reason that Voice over IP networks can carry this traffic cheaper is because IP networks make better use of the bandwidth that is available. When making a call the voice changes from analog to digital, it is then highly compressed and carried in packets over the IP networks. With this technology, the Voice over IP networks can carry a significantly higher volume of calls as the PSTN and provide better voice quality. In addition, the customers benefit with the savings passed down to them through lower rates and paying for one bill for two services.

Software VoIP benefits those who do a great deal of travel or limited phone use at home. It is great for wireless set-ups. When you set up an account with a provider of software VoIP, you can then download the service directly to your computer. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection; sound card, microphone and speakers, and you are ready to make telephone calls through your computer. The convenience of the software VoIP is that wherever you travel, when you take your laptop with you, you also have use of your phone. The location of where you can call is dependent on the type of service you chose.

To use Hardware VoIP you need an adapter to connect your current telephone to your broadband service. Several providers will offer the adapter free when you sign up for one of their VoIP plans. Monthly service rates can range from $9.95 to $49.95 per month. You can choose between residential or business plans, limited or unlimited calling. Most providers offer a plan to match any budget or lifestyle.

Connecting the Digital Dots

Connecting the Digital Dots

As we researched current articles, books, reports, and papers related to digital and visual literacy, it became evident that many definitions apply, and the skills needed for digital and visual literacy are still being identified. However, common findings aid in furthering our understanding and awareness of what it means to be literate in the 21st century. Our world today is about connecting the digital dots. The challenge is in dealing with the complexity—the dots are multidimensional, of varying sizes and colors, continuously changing, and linked to other, as yet unimagined dots. Nonetheless, to successfully connect the dots at any level in cyberspace means we must be literate, both digitally and visually. According to a recent report from the Workforce Commission’s National Alliance of Business, “The current and future health of America’s 21st century economy depends directly on how broadly and deeply Americans reach a new level of literacy—‘21st Century Literacy.’”4
